ALL ABOUT OIL PAINTING BRUSHES
In this post, we are going to talk all about Oil Painting Brushes.
So the truth is that I have got a heck lot of Oil Painting Brushes . I use a whole Variety of different makes different types of fibres ,shapes and different sizes as well. And the brushes that I am using currently comes with a sleek zippered portable case with a stand-up functionality. It also has pallet knife and a sponge for water colour paintings.
PAINTING PROCESS
Now lets break this post further .
Let me tell you where exactly in painting process we can use these brushes. And If you have watched my painting videos, you will know I start my painting with what is farthest away and normally build surface of painting with layers. If you haven’t watched, then kindly take a look here.
BRUSHES USED IN BLOCK-IN PROCESS
I try to block my canvas with broad bristle Oil brushes . So, in the initial layer there is no detailing at all and I try to cover as much ground as possible . For this you just need to Block in and you can use Oil brush size 15 ,14 and 13 for blocking in.
Now as you know there are 3 parts to my painting process : Blocking in , modelling and detail. When we break it out in this manner, it helps us to understand such a complicated process which painting really is.
BRUSHES USED IN MODELLING PROCESS
The next part of the process is modelling. And here, we need some control so for that, we can use 7, 11 and 12 .
Now, let me tell you little bit more about these synthetic bristle .
These mimic a hog bristle but, they hold their shape a little bit better and it has got just little bit more springiness to them. I can create some more controlled line works using them. Now, they have double clamped the hairs with extra strong ferrules . So they don’t rust or fall out, making them extremely durable as well as easy to clean.
These are some of my favourite brushes you will see me using these more in future. When you are painting, if you are using synthetics then, you must pay attention to the type of fibre. Because, some of the materials that are there in oil paints and their mediums can actually deteriorate the brush . My brushes has nylon which handles solvent and chemicals really well.
When it comes to dagger brushes I can’t appreciate enough. Because, these are really beautiful brushes. You can make such a fine line, a point or a broad stroke using this brush in controlled way. If you guys ask me, I can finish an entire painting just using dagger brushes. Now, we are done with modelling part and we are ready for detail part.
BRUSHES USED IN DETAILING PROCESS
Here, we need to change the type of brushes and we need more control to communicate texture. So, for this process you can use Siberian Mink Sable Hair brushes with Triangle Matte Wooden Handle. Because, this provides awesome wooden grip. You can draw grass and fine hair with these brushes. This is great to communicate great textures, tree details , leaves , wrinkle around the eyes.
